About this training

Do you work with children or want to learn how to provide first aid to babies and children? With the First Aid for Baby and Child training course, you develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond quickly and safely during accidents and medical emergencies involving children.

The training consists of a Red Cross e-learning module followed by a practical session led by a Red Cross-certified instructor. During the e-learning, you learn to recognise injuries and understand what to do in different situations. You also learn how to create a child-safe environment and prevent common accidents such as burns, poisoning and falls.

After completing the online theory, you join a 4-hour practical session where you practise important first aid actions such as CPR, using an AED, applying bandages and helping a child who is choking. After successfully completing the practical assessment, you receive a recognised Red Cross First Aid for Baby and Child certificate.

During this training, you learn how to provide first aid safely and effectively to babies and children in emergency situations. You develop practical skills to recognise injuries, assess situations and respond quickly when a child needs help. The theory is directly applied during the practical session.

Assessing the condition of a baby or child

CPR including AED use
Choking, suffocation and drowning
Neck, head and spinal injuries
Foreign objects in the nose, ear or eye
Lost or broken teeth
Fever and convulsions
Cardiac arrest and unconsciousness
Nosebleeds and severe bleeding
Skin injuries and burns
Poisoning
Lip injuries and trapped fingers
Severe allergic reactions

After this training, you know how to provide first aid safely and effectively to babies and children in emergency situations. You can assess injuries, respond quickly and support children until professional help arrives. You also know how to act in situations involving choking, drowning, burns, severe bleeding and allergic reactions.

During the practical session, a Red Cross-certified instructor assesses your practical skills and knowledge. After successfully completing the assessment, you receive a recognised Red Cross First Aid for Baby and Child certificate. The certificate is valid for 2 years and meets the requirements of the Childcare Act.
